Breast Cancer Awareness Month: The Part YOUR Gums Play. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among American women, second only to skin cancer. A huge percentage of women in the United States will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, however, the good news is that occurrence of breast cancer is declining, and there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors alive today. While breast cancer might not seem like it would have an association with your oral health, it actually does. Recent studies have shown that breast cancer and gum disease are closely related, including a study published online on Dec. 21, 2015 by the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Having gum disease actually increases your risk of developing breast cancer. The vicious cycle between breast cancer and gum disease is a tough one to break.
A person that has poor oral health is far more likely to develop breast cancer, AND, a person who is undergoing treatment for this cancer is at a much higher risk for other dental problems.
The entire team here at Flower Mound Dental & Dr. William E. Wyatt Jr. DDS would like to do our part in helping to prevent this deadly disease.
