Dental Implants, the importance of replacing missing teeth

Missing teeth can cause a host of issues, not just with your appearance but also with your oral health. Without teeth in place, your remaining teeth can shift, leading to bite issues or jaw pain. A gap where a tooth once was can also increase the risk of gum disease, bone loss, and other issues. Thankfully, dental implants exist to fix these problems, and Flower Mound Dental is here to help guide you through the process.

So what is a dental implant? A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root surgically placed into the jawbone where a natural tooth is missing. It consists of three separate parts: the implant post, the abutment, and the crown.

The process of getting a dental implant usually consists of several stages.

Stage 1 – Consultation

The first step is a consultation with Dr. Wyatt to determine if a dental implant is the right option for you. During this visit, Dr. Wyatt will review your medical history, assess your oral health, and take X-rays or scans to determine the best placement for the dental implant.

Step 2 – Installation of the Dental Implant

Once you and Dr. Wyatt decide that a dental implant is the best choice, the implant itself will be placed into the jawbone during a minor surgery.

We do offer IV sedation for your comfort, but many patients are completely fine without sedation during the surgery. You will be completely numb for the procedure. After this procedure, it takes 2-6 months for the implant to fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration. During this time, we closely monitor with post operative checkups to make sure you’re healing properly.

Stage 3 – Installation of the abutment

After the implants have fused with the bone, the next step is the installation of an abutment or connector piece. This is a small metal post that attaches to the implant and protrudes above the gumline.

Stage 4 – Crown

Once the abutment is in place, a dental crown (replacement tooth) is then designed to attach to the abutment. The crown will be made to blend in with your natural teeth and color so you will have a seamless finish.

Dental implants have several benefits over other tooth replacement options. A dental implant will help to maintain bone mass in the jaw, which can delay the sagging of facial features. Additionally, dental implants allow patients to chew and speak normally and confidently, mimicking the strength, durability, and feel of natural teeth.

As you can see, dental implants are a highly effective way to replace teeth! They’re long-lasting, durable, and can help prevent health problems that may arise due to missing teeth. This is especially important for those who are prone to diabetes, heart disease, and other autoimmune diseases.
